News from the Jesus Trail, III: The Ordinary Made Extraordinary by The Reverend Dr. Jo Forrest After a steep, heart-racing ascent to the top of Nazareth, we descended into a valley covered in spring wildflowers. We walked through areas with brushes blooming at our shoulders, knees, and ankles. We hope to remember this array of color over the litter in other areas. The 16-year-olds had a cat counting contest and coaxed the sheep herds into a vocal response. We skirted commercial medicinal agriculture greenhouses and olive orchards on our way to Zippori National Park and its archaeological digs. A long day’s journey ended in Cana at the infamous church commemorating Jesus’ first miracle in the gospel of John, our devotion for the day. https://www.kuc.org/the-ordinary-made-extraordinary/
Dogs like to sing in church, listen to the sacred cacophony of yelps and howls. The worship service includes an opportunity for the pets to each receive an individual blessing. https://www.kuc.org/blessing-of-the-animals-2/
Did You Know? Kenilworth Union Church is known in the community to be the place where youth feel at home. Youth Ministries serve over 250 young people in grades 5 and up with youth groups, Sunday school, confirmation, service opportunities, pastoral care, mission trips, fellowship, retreats, and the number keeps growing! Last Year… —High school youth contributed more than 1,200 hours of service to church programs, the community, and our Outreach agencies. —50 youth packed over 90 care packages for college freshman. —A team of college students from Church went on the first-ever College Winter Break Mission Trip to work alongside the Cajun Army to remove mold from flooded homes in southeastern Texas during Hurricane Harvey. —The high school IMPACT Mission Trip program sent a total of over 125 people to Cuba over two weeks in June to help support Christian Ministries there. Yet there is so much more we can be doing! Your pledge will help keep this generation of young people and the ones that follow engaged and supported. The labyrinth at Kenilworth Union Church has only recently been created to commemorate the church’s 125th anniversary, but labyrinths have been known to the human race for more than four thousand years. Traditional designs evolved from the spiral forms of nature, and our labyrinth is shaped following a Baltic pattern. It is located in the small grassy space to the left of the covered walkway and protected by the bushes lining the front walkway. The location is ideal, as the space will be protected but also feel like a secret meditative garden. We welcome the support of the congregation to keep the path well cared-for and maintained in the future. We anticipate a dedication ceremony in September, weather permitting. As we get closer to the dedication, we will provide prayers that may be used following the labyrinth path. Thank you to Bev Lang and the Building and Grounds Committee for all of their support in executing the labyrinth idea for the 125th celebration. We look forward to enjoying the path during the years ahead. https://www.kuc.org/category/125th-anniversary/
